The Arctic Light

As a follow up to his previous piece called The Mountain (featured in a previous post) Terje Sørgjerd has released another amazing time-lapse video called The Arctic Light.

My favorite natural phenomenon is one I do not even know the name of, even after talking to meteorologists and astrophysicists I am none the wiser. What I am talking about I have decided to call The Arctic Light and it is a natural phenomenon occurring 2-4 weeks before you can see the Midnight Sun.

This video was shot between April 29th and May 10th on the Lofoten archipelago in Nordland, Norway. It was a difficult shoot: he fell into the Arctic sea twice, broke lenses, filters, a tripod, computer and lost the whole dolly rig and controller into the sea. And after falling off “a rather tall rock” he even ended up in the hospital.

As much as I wanted to give up, the best way Out is always “Through”. I am glad I stuck it through though because there were some amazing sunrises waiting.

We’re also glad he didn’t give up and was able to capture this amazing footage!

The Mountain

Many have climbed mountains looking for answers. I’m not sure what question Norwegian landscape photographer/videographer Terje Sørgjerd had in mind when he climbed Spain’s highest mountain, the volcanic peak Pico del Teide in the Canary Islands (12,198 feet), to shoot time-lapse landscape footage, but he sure found something beautiful.

The goal was to capture the beautiful Milky Way galaxy along with one of the most amazing mountains I know El Teide. I have to say this was one of the most exhausting trips I have done. There was a lot of hiking at high altitudes and probably less than 10 hours of sleep in total for the whole week. Having been here 10-11 times before I had a long list of must-see locations I wanted to capture for this movie, but I am still not 100% used to carrying around so much gear required for time-lapse movies.

He’s now working on a new piece called “The Arctic Light”. Looking foward to seeing that!

Update 5/30/11: The Arctic Light has been released!
